Fink - Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet 2012 [FLAC-16-44.1]
What is more touching than having an hour alone with a FINK record? Right, doing that with a FINK live record. This music is made for being played live and I assume, the recordings for studio albums are not really different from the live situation. Wheels turn beneath my feet is the impressive documentary of how Finian Greenall and his band mates Guy Whittaker and Tim Thornton transfer the simple joy of playing together to a higher experience. Having seen them live recently strengthens this impression. This record also helps to see FINK as it is: a band touring for years now, rather than ‘Greenall and his musicians’ as sometimes described. The symbiosis of those three passionate musicians is special and within all serious depth of their music and lyrics one thing is prevalent: Three guys who still can’t believe that they travel the world together and create something new with guitar, bass and drums every night in front of thousands of people.
What about the music? Of course this album combines 13 extended live versions from concerts in London, Amsterdam or Prague. Excellent sound and mix don’t let you miss anything compared to the studio version. Even better, there is an extra dimension in the arrangements and spirits worth getting this album. Audience is hearable but not too much to be distracted – so this even adds value and mood to the common experience.
A lot was written about Greenall’s background as producer of electronic music. Well the live experience brings those roots back more dominant than ever before. FINK masters to build up a compelling atmosphere with each song and Greenall’s guitar work is much about creating percussive, sometimes noisy, soundscapes rather than usual songwriter playing. The live versions have sort of an electronic club vibe regarding the slowly but steadily escalation of emotion. If you want to know what this band really is about, the live record debut Wheels turn beneath my feet is a must. And if you need another argument – the album is also available with an 84 page photo book covering many tour impressions.
