Myra Taylor - My Night To Dream 2001 [FLAC-16-44.1]
A veteran jazz singer with solid backing by swinging KC musicians, this is a real treat for old-school swing lovers. Taylor sings uptempo (self-penned Spider and the Fly, as well as Mamma He Treats Your Daughter Mean, Lady Be Good and several more) and slower ballads, including a gorgeous, lush I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire. Her voice is deep and rich, yet gentle. A solid album that is great as foreground jazz, background music, over dinner or dancing.
With 'My Night To Dream', Taylor brings to the contemporary jazz scene a vivid glimpse of the past. This is the same Myra Taylor that scored chart-busters for Mercury Records in the 1940s. Some of those hits - most notably Spider And The Fly, Take It Easy Greasy and Still Blue Water - are redone here. And to some that are familiar with Myra's career, these takes sound better than the originals. Perhaps this shouldn't be so amazing, but to those who have heard this release so far, it has been.
