Pierre Fournier - Bach, J.S.- Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012(2CD) 1961 [FLAC-24-192]


the light and lively 1985 recording by Yo Yo Ma is a fun listening experience. Good music to listen to in the car while driving; no concentration needed to enjoy them and take mind off the wheel. Here however, in the Fournier recordings one discovers that French ' air de joie' and internal sonority that reminds one of the playful side of Bach and brings forward the sense of dance in these pieces. Highly recommend this recording as an additional choice to the Casals recording for that reason. Have not yet received the recording by Janos Starker, but, can add that the Rostropovich recording still remains in last place. Technically brilliant, I find as is often the case-be it instrumental or operatic, the Russian mind set tends to over intellectualize the music outside their culture and it becomes dark and brooding. Best they stay in the realm of Slavic pieces and Russian art where that drama and dark cerebral effect is successful, and leave the romantic German art and Italian passionate are forms to others..the exemption being Gregor Piatigorsky
