Boston Symphony Orchestra - Smetana - Má Vlast 1986 [16-44.1]
A great Czech conductor to direct a reference version of Ma Vlast (My Homeland) by Bedrich Smetana, that seems a bit easy and straightforward (that of Vltava (Moldau in German) obviously ...). Perhaps, but the fact remains that Rafael Kubelik, at the head of one of the great American orchestras, gives these pages a truly astonishing relief. If the 6 symphonic poems that make up this cycle are independent, they form a whole while being linked by themes that can be found from one poem to another. They should therefore be listened to as a vast cyclical and descriptive symphony. The narration given by Kubelik will then appear all the more obvious. F H
