1959 年夏天，艺术委员会的威尔士委员会向格蕾丝・威廉姆斯提出委托创作一部独幕歌剧的提议，这为她实现长久以来的渴望提供了契机。在剧本创作上，这位作曲家将目光投向了法国讽刺作家居伊・德・莫泊桑带有残酷幽默的短篇小说《家庭》。故事中，一位脾气暴躁的家长看似离世，却揭露了家庭成员的贪婪本性。威廉姆斯以这个故事为基础创作了自己的剧本《客厅》，为增强戏剧效果，她对莫泊桑的原作进行了润色与精简，并将故事背景从法国塞纳河岸迁移到维多利亚时代海滨小镇的一间客厅。这部戏剧以两个场景和一段简短的间歇构成，剧情发生在 1870 年的一个夏日。《客厅》一剧充分展现出格蕾丝・威廉姆斯作为天生剧院作曲家的特质，以及她刻画和塑造角色的出众天赋。
