Some 13,000 residences were destroyed in the devastating wildfires that tore through the west and east sides of Los Angeles County in January 2025, including the Altadena home of singer-songwriter Lorely Rodriguez, a.k.a. Empress Of. A year and a half later, her family has rebuilt—and Dream House is a meditation on loss and heartache, the sense of safety, the comforts of familiarity and, yes, optimism. Even when Rodriguez is singing about how "Chaos is a friend visiting/ Stronger than a pulse," you feel that sense of hope on "Wild Storm," lit up with airy-and-lively strings and the chirp of birds and insects. Throughout, there are snippets of conversation featuring the calm, reassuring presence of her mother, Reina, and the timeline-setting titles say it all: "We Have Walls" (recorded during the early days of the rebuild), "I'm Always Home with You," "Nunca Tuve Miedo" ("I Was Never Afraid") and, finally, "Welcome to the House." "Today is actually one year that my house … burned, and my dream is about to get true," she says on that last one over a mellow, almost New Age-y gust.

"You can lay your head and sleep/ Knowing you are safe with me/ The kitchen is granite/ Just how you want it … Filled with all your favorite things," Rodriguez vows, perhaps to both her mom and herself, on the title track, a feather-touch R&B number. It was written, Rodriguez has said, after she escaped to Norway "in an attempt to find a home anywhere outside of L.A."—admitting the experience was "jarring and lonely, not exactly the comfort I was hoping for." But that distance gave her space to imagine something new. As always, Empress Of exists comfortably in a hazy dreamscape. "Blue Light," a soulful duet with frequent collaborator Dev Hynes/Blood Orange, is particularly otherworldly. "Missing Out On" drifts softly, and "I Pray 4 U" pairs rumbling low-end with a glistening sheen of synth vacillation. But "SYW" (shorthand for "Say You Wanna") shimmers like a sunrise rave, providing a gentle energy boost rather than a caffeine blast. "Can we not speak/ Words feel like a crime/ Everytime you say you wanna hold me closer," Rodriguez sings alongside Cecile Believe, another repeat collaborator. A too-brief interlude, "Waiting" is the most traditional pop song of the bunch, a head-over-heels, Björk-esque melody told with sweet piano and strings. And "Machete" is a wonder—an unexpected mix of R&B soul and emo with a bump-and-grind beat. "I'm a machete/ Sharp and ready," Rodriguez sings—a promise, rather than a threat—and the world should pay attention. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
