The new label 〈Appels〉 presents its first release: the album Appels by the French-based pianist Mirai Sumino. The album comprises a total of 11 pieces: seven works by Mel Bonis depicting women from literature and mythology, Claude Debussy’s L’Île joyeuse, and all three movements of Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. This album brings together three composers—who, whilst born in France between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, have been received very differently throughout music history—placing them on a common plane through the performance of Mirai Sumino and a present-day recorded sound.
