《大地之歌》是马勒根据贝特格德译的中国诗集《中国之笛》所写成的六乐章人声与乐团作品。由于《中国之笛》是参考两个法文版本、一个德文版本的中国古诗集转译编辑而成；而马勒在创作的同时也对歌词做了补充与修改，所以有些作品已经无法核对出原诗。虽然歌词特有的韵味与气质已经完全德语化，但是中国古诗的内涵神韵、意象情境仍在音乐裡时时浮现。

2005年，中国作曲家叶小钢根据马勒《大地之歌》所选取的唐诗，以同样的型式创作、中文演唱，就像是对一世纪前马勒的作品做出回应。不过。叶小钢把第二、三乐章的顺序对调，终乐章〈告别〉也不像马勒的作品般长达三十分钟。因为《大地之歌》是马勒晚年，也就是逝世前三年的作品，音乐裡透露著作曲家对人生无常的悲观态度，带有厌世的思想。而叶小钢创作《大地之歌》的时候正好五十岁，还是个雄心勃勃的中年人，因此作品裡也就充满自我奋斗的理想，表达的是对生命的热爱，以及积极的入世态度。
