The Kyrie eleison is a liturgical supplication originating in the Greek church, where it expresses the congregation's coming together in prayer. In the Catholic and Lutheran churches the Kyrie eleison constitutes the beginning of the mass; it is sung, to invoke the trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. The Kyrie performed here takes its inspiration from Arvo Pärt. The musical style is a combination of traditional and modern elements, resulting in an expressive style that allows Schola Cantorum to demonstrate its individuality through the words Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy).
