　1970年3月27日、ニューヨーク郊外のロング・アイランドでベネズエラ系の父とアイルランド系の母の間に生まれる。母親はシティ・オペラの舞台にも立っていたシンガーで、マライアも３才で歌手になる決心をしたという。マンハッタンでウェイトレスをしながら、デモテープ作りに励むなどプロの歌手を目指していたところ、ブレンダ・Ｋ・スターのコーラスとして注目を集める。1988年に彼女のデモテープを聴いた当時CBSレコード（現Sony Music Entertainment）社長のトミー・モトーラに見出され契約。その後1990年に“7オクターヴの歌姫“というキャッチフレーズでデビュー。「Vision of Love」、「Emotions」、「Hero」、「Fantasy」など次々に全米No.1ヒットを送りだした。なかでもボーイズIIメンとのデュエット曲「One Sweet Day」(1995年)は、全米チャート16週連続1位の史上最高記録を樹立した。また、日本では1994年の年末に「All I Want for Christmas Is You」（邦題：恋人たちのクリスマス）がロングセラーになっている。2002年から2014年はユニバーサル・ミュージック傘下のIsland/Def Jam Music Groupに在籍し、「We Belong Together」（全米チャート14週1位）、「Touch My Body」などのヒット曲を残している。
